De Pijp: the district that stays up late
De Pijp is the part of Amsterdam that feels least like a postcard and most like a city people actually live in. It sits just south of the Amstel, packed tight with nineteenth-century streets, and it has the best appetite in town. Where the canal ring winds down around eleven, De Pijp is still deciding where to go next.
For a traveller that matters. If your flight landed late, if dinner was somewhere over Germany and you are hungry at an hour when other districts have closed their kitchens, this is where the evening can still start properly.

The character of the neighbourhood
The Albert Cuypmarkt runs through the middle of it, the largest daily street market in the country, loud until late afternoon and then swept clean for the evening. Sarphatipark is a green square of shade and benches at the centre, the old Heineken brewery stands at the northern edge by the Stadhouderskade, and Ferdinand Bolstraat runs the length of the district like a spine.
Around those landmarks sits an unusual density of small restaurants: Syrian, Surinamese, Basque, Japanese, Italian, often eight tables and a menu on a chalkboard. Gerard Douplein and the Frans Halsbuurt hold the terraces, and the bars keep going long after the museum quarter has gone quiet.

Rooms in the market district
What you sleep in here has a different character from the centre. Expect design-led properties along Ferdinand Bolstraat and the Ceintuurbaan, several larger houses on the Stadhouderskade facing the water, and a good deal of apartment-style accommodation scattered through the side streets. Lobbies tend to be small, staff tend to be young and the atmosphere is noticeably informal.
That informality makes arrivals simple. Nobody in a De Pijp reception is watching the door, and your companion walks in the way any friend meeting you for dinner would.

Notice and travel
An hour from confirmation is the working figure. Line 52 runs beneath Ferdinand Bolstraat with a station in the middle of the district, putting Centraal about four minutes away, and trams 3, 12 and 24 cross from every direction, so a companion coming from elsewhere in the city moves quickly. Traffic on the Ceintuurbaan can be sticky at the end of the working day, so an early evening booking is the one to ask about a few hours ahead rather than at the last moment.

The shape of a night in De Pijp
Two small plates somewhere with no reservation system, a cocktail bar with an unmarked front, and then whichever place on the Gerard Douplein still has a table. De Pijp borders Oud-Zuid across Ferdinand Bolstraat, which is why the Rijksmuseum feels closer than the map suggests, and Amsterdam Centrum begins as soon as you cross the Amstel to the north. Same hour of notice, same starting fare, and the boarding steps are identical wherever you are staying.
