Oud-Zuid: grand lobbies and the museum quarter
Oud-Zuid is Amsterdam with its collar up. Wide avenues, tall brick houses, trees down the middle of the road and a general sense that nobody here is in a hurry. It holds the city's museums, its concert hall, its serious shopping street and most of its grand hotels, which is why so many business travellers end up sleeping here without ever choosing to.
It is also the district that suits an unhurried evening best. If your night has a dress code, a restaurant reservation and a reason to make an effort, this is the right part of town for it.

The character of the district
Museumplein is the anchor: the Rijksmuseum along one side, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk along another, and a wide lawn in the middle that fills with students in summer and skaters in winter. The Concertgebouw closes the southern end, and its evening audiences spill out onto the square just before eleven.
West of that lies Vondelpark, the city's green room, and north of it the Willemsparkbuurt with P.C. Hooftstraat and its luxury windows. Further south, the Apollolaan and Beethovenstraat run through the quieter residential streets where the old money lives, and the towers of the financial district glint at the far edge.

The hotels of the museum quarter
This is where the grand houses are. Several stand on and around the Apollolaan, with car access, doormen and proper lobbies, and others sit along the edge of Vondelpark and the streets behind the Concertgebouw. There are also smaller, more discreet properties in the Willemsparkbuurt, conversions of large family homes, that regular visitors guard as a secret.
Staff in these houses are experienced and unflappable. A companion crossing one of these lobbies in the evening reads as exactly what she appears to be, someone meeting a guest for dinner, and nothing about the arrival needs managing.

Getting here and how long it takes
Around an hour from confirmation, and often smoother than the centre because the streets here are broad and made for cars. Trams 2, 5 and 12 serve the district, taxis reach the front doors without negotiating bridges, and the ring road is close enough that a companion travelling from the south or from the airport side arrives quickly. An evening concert finishing at eleven is no obstacle to a booking that starts at half past.

An evening in Oud-Zuid
Dinner somewhere with white linen on Cornelis Schuytstraat or Van Baerlestraat, a concert if the programme suits, and a nightcap in a hotel bar that knows how to make one. Nearby on the board
De Pijp starts on the other side of Ferdinand Bolstraat if you want the evening to end somewhere livelier, and Amsterdam Centrum is fifteen minutes north by tram. Oud-Zuid is also the closest district to the motorway out to Schiphol, which makes it a sensible base for anyone flying early.
