Den Haag: company from the Binnenhof to the sea
Den Haag is the most formal city in the Netherlands and the only one with a beach at the end of the tram line. It holds parliament, the palaces, the courts and most of the embassies, which gives the centre a quiet, well-tailored atmosphere that Amsterdam has never had any interest in. Then Scheveningen begins, and suddenly there is sand and a pier and wind off the North Sea.
Like Utrecht and Rotterdam, Den Haag is a travel destination for us. Your companion comes out from Amsterdam, so the clock is longer than a city-district booking and worth planning around.

Two cities in one
The old centre is built around the Binnenhof, the parliamentary complex on its lake, with the Mauritshuis and its Vermeers a few steps away and the Noordeinde Palace working away up the road. The Lange Voorhout is a tree-lined square with the best terraces in the city, and the Denneweg behind it holds the antique dealers and the small restaurants. The Peace Palace sits further out in its own grounds.
Four kilometres northwest, Scheveningen is a full seaside resort: a long boulevard, a pier with a wheel on the end, a working harbour and a row of fish restaurants. In summer the promenade is busy until late; in winter it is empty and rather beautiful, and an evening walk there in a coat is one of the better things this country offers.

Hotel districts
Business travellers usually end up in one of three places. The centre around the Lange Voorhout and the Binnenhof holds the classic houses within walking distance of everything. The zone near Den Haag Centraal and the World Forum serves the conference and institutional traffic, all modern buildings and good car access. Scheveningen has the seafront properties, most with a sea view and a different rhythm entirely.
Distances between them are small. A companion arriving at a boulevard hotel and one arriving in the government quarter are working from the same travel plan, with ten minutes between the two.

The journey, and the clock it runs on
Trains leave Amsterdam Centraal several times an hour and reach Den Haag in about fifty minutes, or a little over half that on the high-speed route. From Schiphol the ride is roughly thirty minutes. A car on the A4 takes fifty to eighty minutes, and the stretch past Leiden is the usual source of delay in the evening rush.
Plan on about two hours from confirmation to arrival, a little more if you are out at Scheveningen. Bookings made earlier in the day give you the widest choice of companions, which matters more here than the travel time does.

An evening in a diplomatic city
Den Haag rewards an evening with some structure. A restaurant on the Denneweg, an exhibition if the timing works, a drink on the Voorhout in summer or a hotel bar in winter, and a taxi to the sea if the night is still young. The airport run to the coast
Den Haag sits on the same railway as Schiphol, with direct trains pulling into Den Haag Centraal roughly thirty minutes after leaving the airport. From there the government quarter is a five-minute walk, and trams 1 and 9 run out to Scheveningen in roughly twenty minutes. Travellers flying in for a hearing at one of the international courts often never set foot in Amsterdam at all.
For us the journey runs the other way, from Amsterdam down the coast, and the planning mirrors Utrecht and Rotterdam. Write early, send the hotel name, and say whether you are in the centre or out by the sea, because the last stretch to the boulevard adds a quarter of an hour. Evenings between the courts and the sea
Den Haag keeps its public landmarks close together. The Hofvijver pond reflects the Binnenhof towers and is lit after dark, the Escher museum occupies a former palace on the Lange Voorhout, and the Peace Palace stands behind its gates at the edge of the Zorgvliet park. Out on the coast, the Scheveningen pier reaches into the North Sea, and the fishing harbour further along has a row of seafood restaurants with the boats moored alongside.
In winter the boulevard is almost empty and the surf is loud, and a walk on the sand before a late dinner is the kind of evening this city does better than anywhere else on the board. In summer the beach pavilions stay open late and the sunset over the water brings everyone out.

It depends on the reason for the trip. Meetings in the government quarter or at the courts favour the centre, a few days of rest favour the sea. The two are twenty minutes apart by tram, so an evening in one while sleeping in the other is easy.

Around two hours, sometimes a little more on a busy summer weekend when the boulevard traffic is heavy. Book earlier in the day and the timing is rarely an issue.
