Schiphol works like a small city fifteen kilometres southwest of Amsterdam, with one enormous terminal, a railway station beneath it and Schiphol Plaza connecting the two. The hotels sit in rings around that core: a handful within walking distance of the terminal building, more in the office parks at Schiphol-Rijk and along the Oude Meer, and a further cluster in Hoofddorp and Badhoevedorp, most of them served by shuttle buses that run through the night.

One practical point outranks every other. Your companion can reach you only where the public can go, which means a hotel outside passport control. A room booked beyond the border check, on the secure side, is out of bounds to any visitor arriving from the street, so a traveller still in transit cannot be reached there. Honest answer: quieter than one in town, and often better for it. There is no restaurant worth crossing the city for, so most airport evenings are a long conversation, a bottle from the bar before it closes and company that makes a transit hotel feel like somewhere rather than nowhere. Some travellers do the opposite and go into the city, twenty minutes by train, for dinner in Amsterdam Centrum before coming back. That works, and it is worth saying so when you book so the timing accounts for the return journey.

Reception desks here never really sleep. Crews check in at dawn, passengers arrive at one in the morning, and nobody at the desk registers a guest arriving in the evening as unusual. If you have an alarm set for four, say so when you book: an overnight that ends before the shuttle does is easy to arrange, and the fare card explains how longer bookings are quoted. If you are staying nearer the motorway in Oud-Zuid instead, the drive out in the morning is a straight run.
