Rotterdam: high floors, late tables, company on the Maas
Rotterdam is the one Dutch city that looks forward instead of back. The old centre was lost in 1940 and what replaced it is a skyline, the only real one in the country, standing over Europe's largest port. The result is a city of towers, bridges and enormous windows, with a nightlife that starts later and finishes later than Amsterdam's.
It is a travel destination on our board, so your companion arrives from Amsterdam. Given how many Rotterdam hotel rooms are on high floors with a view worth sitting in front of, that journey is rarely wasted.

The character of the city
The Erasmusbrug arcs across the Maas like a harp and connects the centre to Kop van Zuid, where the old Holland America terminal now stands among the towers of the Wilhelminapier. The Markthal curves over a food hall, the Cube Houses tilt on their stalks beside the old harbour, and the Euromast still looks out over everything from the western edge. Rotterdam Centraal, with its great angled roof, is a landmark in its own right.
The evening city gathers on the Witte de Withstraat, a single street of bars, galleries and kitchens, with the Meent and the Hofbogen arches carrying the overflow. Dinner at ten is normal here in a way it is not further north.

Where the hotels stand
Three areas cover nearly every stay. Around Rotterdam Centraal and the Weena sit the large modern houses used by business travellers, minutes from the station. On the Wilhelminapier at Kop van Zuid are the tower hotels with the river views, reached across the Erasmusbrug. The third group sits along the Coolsingel and near the Witte de Withstraat, closest to the restaurants and the late bars.
All three have generous lobbies and staff who see travellers arriving at every hour, so an evening arrival is entirely unremarkable. If your building has a separate residential entrance, a common arrangement on the Wilhelminapier, mention it when you book.

Travel and the extra notice
Intercity trains from Amsterdam Centraal take around sixty-five minutes, and the high-speed service does it in forty. From Schiphol the fast train is about twenty-six minutes, which makes Rotterdam surprisingly close to the airport. By road the A4 and A13 take sixty to ninety minutes depending on the hour.
Allow roughly two hours from confirmation to a knock at your door, and rather less if your companion is already travelling south. A message earlier in the day widens the choice considerably, and layover travellers often arrange a Rotterdam evening before their flight even leaves.

How the evening runs
Dinner somewhere on the Witte de Withstraat or high up on the Wilhelminapier, a bar afterwards that has no intention of closing, and the bridge lit up over the water on the way back.
